Our company has received the Business and Sustainability Award, in the Environment category, granted by the Valencian newspaper Levante-EMV and Banco Sabadell. On 9 November, our General Manager, Gaizka Lara Goiricelaya, attended the awards ceremony, which was held at the Business Hub of Banco Sabadell in Valencia.
About the awards
In its third edition, the Business and Sustainability Awards recognise the good ESG practices of Valencian companies. The aim of these awards is, according to their sponsors, "to support the development of Valencian society through the recognition of its most cutting-edge and ethical companies and, in this way, to recognise the work of those that meet the conditions for this". In this edition, 45 Valencian companies applied for one of the three categories (Environment, Social Responsibility and Governance).
Our company Aranco presented its candidacy in the Environment category, in which 21 companies competed, and in which we were finally the winners. In the
Social Responsibility and Governance categories, the winning companies were Interfabrics and Libertas 7, respectively, and we congratulate them on their awards.
At the awards ceremony, Gaizka Lara, CEO of Aranco, collected the trophy, an original sculpture designed by Creaktivamente in olive wood.
The Jury
At the event held at Banco Sabadell's Business Hub in Valencia, our CEO thanked, on his own behalf and on behalf of the entire company, the decision of the jury, made up of Fernando Canós, Deputy General Manager and Eastern Territorial Director of Banco Sabadell; Elena Carrera, General Manager and Director of Sustainability and Efficiency of Banco Sabadell; Pedro Coca, President of the Étnor Foundation; and Felipe Carrasco, Regional Secretary for Industry, Trade and Consumer Affairs of the Generalitat Valenciana.
Statements by our Director General
Gaizka Lara, after collecting the award, highlighted the "courage and lack of prejudice" on the part of the jury, "in awarding a company like Aranco, dedicated to industrial packaging and plastic, in the Environment category". He also thanked the panel of experts for having understood that "we are dedicated to reduce our customers' plastic consumption". Our CEO added that the achievement of "a great team" is not an end or an accomplished goal, but "part of the road we want to continue on (...). At Aranco, we believe that to be sustainable, a company has to be profitable and to be profitable it has to be sustainable", he concluded.
Why we are applying for the award
We decided to apply for this award because we are introducing PCR recycled content and low micron stretch films to the market, developed with European partners, films that reduce film consumption and waste generation. In addition, we have designed and put on the market (2022-2023) a new range of smart wrappers, manufactured with eco-design criteria from prefabricated aluminium modules.
In 2021 we inaugurated our new headquarters, located in Massamagrell (Valencia) and made up of three buildings built under criteria of productivity, wellbeing, optimisation of energy resources, reduction of environmental impact and adaptation to the climate requirements of our territory. We have our own installation of photovoltaic panels for self-consumption and the façades of the office buildings and auxiliary building are partially covered with an outer covering of slats similar to wood, made from rice paste and recycled resins, which reduce sunlight during the hottest months of the year and give our facilities their peculiar appearance.
The industrial building, meanwhile, is partially dug into the ground, for greater thermal comfort in both winter and summer, without the need for air-conditioning systems.
With our packaging services, we help our customers to reduce film consumption, reduce waste and emissions and increase the quality and safety of their packaging. In addition, we improve the ergonomics and working conditions of their employees.
Our customers operate in Spain, Portugal and France, and belong to sectors with a high demand for optimised, efficient and sustainable packaging services, such as the logistics sector, large-scale distribution, food, pharmaceuticals and textiles. With our services, based on innovation and digitalisation, we enable our customers to focus on what is really at the heart of their business.
In the last two decades, with our packaging services, we have managed to remove more than 60,000 tonnes of unproductive film from the market, saving more than 106,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
We are also the first Spanish company in the industrial packaging sector to publish a Sustainability Report (for the 2021 financial year).
Aranco is currently immersed in an ambitious internationalisation project, and we plan to open our second subsidiary outside Spain in Germany in 2024, following the start of our activities in France in 2023. Our opening in Germany will be followed by our own subsidiaries in other European countries in the coming years.
This Business and Sustainability Award is the second award we have received this year 2023, after having been recognised last April with the DHL Green&Digital Innovation Award in the category of Innovation for Supply Chain Robotisation awarded by the multinational DHL.
We are sincerely grateful for these awards because they encourage all areas of Aranco to continue working even harder to provide our customers with increasingly efficient, cost-effective and sustainable non-investment packaging services.
